Importer Exporter Code (IEC Code) Registration Online

International trade is a gateway to a world of opportunities for businesses in India. Whether you're looking to import goods, export products, or expand your business globally, having an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is your key to entering the international market. This Import Export Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce.

For importers, the DGFT IEC and Import Export License are indispensable for customs clearance and facilitating payments to foreign banks. Similarly, exporters rely on the IEC to streamline the shipment process and receive payments from overseas clients.

LegallensIndia simplifies the IEC Registration process by helping businesses obtain their IEC Certificate quickly and efficiently, ensuring they are ready to explore global trade opportunities.

What is IEC Code (Importer Exporter Code)?

IEC stands for Importer Exporter Code. It is a ten-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to businesses involved in importing into or exporting from India.

The DGFT IEC Registration Certificate is mandatory for businesses engaged in international trade. Before importing goods into India, the importing entity must possess both GST Registration and an Import Export Code to complete customs clearance successfully.

Why is IEC Code Important?

The Import Export Code is an essential requirement for businesses entering international markets. It facilitates global trade while offering several operational and financial benefits.

  • Access to International Markets: The DGFT IEC Code enables businesses to import and export goods globally, opening new opportunities for expansion and growth.
  • Completely Online Registration: IEC Registration is an entirely online process with simple documentation requirements.
  • Minimal Documentation: Only a limited number of documents are required for obtaining an Import Export License.
  • Lifetime Validity: The IEC Registration remains valid throughout the lifetime of the business unless surrendered or revoked.
  • Prevents Illegal Trade: Since authentic business information must be provided during registration, obtaining an IEC helps reduce illegal transportation of goods.
  • Government Benefits: Registered importers and exporters can avail subsidies and incentives from Customs, Export Promotion Councils, and other government authorities.
  • GST Benefits: Exporters can export goods under LUT without paying GST or claim GST refunds where tax has been paid.
  • No Annual Compliance: Unlike many other business registrations, IEC Registration does not require annual return filing or recurring compliance.

Validity of DGFT IEC Code

IEC Registration is a one-time registration with lifetime validity. Once issued, the Import Export Code remains valid as long as the business continues to exist or until the registration is surrendered or revoked.

Unlike GST Registration, PF Registration, or other statutory registrations, IEC Registration does not require periodic renewals, annual filings, or return submissions.

Since obtaining an IEC is a one-time process without recurring compliance requirements, businesses involved in import or export are encouraged to obtain the IEC immediately after incorporation.
